Military documents (two signed by Rear Admiral George Dewey), union membership documents, personal and official U.S. government
correspondence, certificate of continuous service, California National Guard certificate, Christmas and New Year card, lithographs
of several U.S. Navy ships with descriptive captions, a printed account of the Battle of Manila Bay in English and Spanish,
and a Japanese annexed passport [visa] for a sailor working as a paymaster for the U.S. Navy. Includes personal diary (typewritten
transcript in folder) for 1896, written aboard the U.S.S. Olympia on a trip to Japan, a genealogy and naval career history
written by descendant Carolyn Sheaff, and a genealogy time line by daughter, Mary Katherine Sheaff Apperson.
Correspondence (11 letters, 32 p.) from two Civil War soldiers, Peter Sheaff and John Fox, written from various field locations
in Tenn., Miss., La., and a military hospital in Gallatin, Tenn. Peter Sheaff (10 letters. 28 p.) describes his involvement
in military actions such the Battle of Shiloh (also known as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing), the Siege of Vicksburg, the
capture of Fort Henry, battles of Davis Bridge on the Hattie River, Port Gibson, and Black River Bridge, among others. One
letter written on pictorial lettersheet with color illustration of a general on horseback reviewing Union troops holding American
flags. The illustration is titled "The War for the Union" with a caption "Stand by me, and I'll stand by you. Gen. McClellan."
John Fox writes his letter (1 letter, 4 p.) containing 3 letters in sequence addressed separately to his wife and children
from Hospital #3 in Gallatin, Tenn. after he was admitted by the Surgeon. Includes typescript transcriptions of all correspondence
and manuscript summaries of key events contained in diary entries. Also includes annotated modern maps of Civil War battlefield
sites corresponding to the locations specified in the letters. Also includes genealogical information on Peter Sheaff and
Kate Fox Sheaff.

Charles Raymond Sheaff (October 9, 1867-May 22, 1942) was born in Holcomb, Illinois. In 1892, he enlisted in the National
Guard of California and served in the U.S. Navy until March 1900. In 1903, he married Ellen Grinsell in Bakersfield, California.
Peter Sheaff, father of Charles Raymond Sheaff, served as a Union soldier with the Army of Tennessee during the Civil War
in Company A, Second Illinois Calvary Regiment.
John Fox, father of Kate Fox Sheaff (mother of Charles Raymond Sheaff) enlisted in the Union Army on Aug. 13, 1862 to serve
three years. He was mustered in Sept. 2, 1862 from Franklin, Ill. He was taken to a hospital in Gallatin, Tenn. on Feb. 19,
1863 by order of the Surgeon. Found to be incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of Phthiois Pulmonalis and
declared not eligible for a pension on March 16, 1863. Discharged on Surgeon's Certificate of Disability at Hospital No. 3,
Gallatin, Tenn. on March 17, 1863 by order of General Rosencrans. Died at Cherry Valley, Ill. on April 6, 1863 of chronic
diarrhea leaving widow and 7 children, ages 8 months to 17 years.
